Gum Disease

At least 80% of the population has some degree of gum disease and most don’t know it. Gum disease is responsible for up to 70% of adult tooth loss and it does not give clear warning signs that an untrained eye would notice. A dentist or hygienist must do a thorough and complete examination to detect it, especially in its early stages. Gum disease is similar to high blood pressure or heart disease - by the time symptoms are noticed it is in an advanced stage.

Gum disease has been implicated as a causative factor in heart disease, stroke, diabetes, pre-mature births, and low birth weight. It is an infection of the gums and jawbones. The bacteria and chemical by-products that the body uses to fight these bacteria can enter the blood stream and cause serious problems in distant parts of the body. It is critical to have a thorough cleaning and examination twice a year. It’s also very important for you to thoroughly clean your teeth twice daily.

The good news is that gum disease can be treated and prevented.

Take the following self-evaluation to help you determine your risk for developing gum disease:

  • Do you smoke?
  • Are you pregnant?
  • Do you have diabetes?
  • Do you grind or clench your teeth?
  • Are you currently taking oral contraceptives?
  • Are you under a great deal of stress?
  • Do you have bad breath?
  • Are your gums red and swollen?
  • Do your gums bleed when brushing and/or flossing?
  • Are you gums pulling away from your teeth or receding?
  • Do you have teeth that appear to be loose?
  • Have you noticed a change in the way your teeth fit together?
  • Have you recently lost a tooth?

If you answered YES to 2 or more of these questions, you might be at risk for, or already have, some form of gum disease. Give us a call so we can conduct a thorough examination of your gums and provide you with effective therapy.

We offer the following services and products:

  • In office deep cleaning for gums
  • Arestin - An innovative antibiotic gel that is applied to the gums and helps to keep bacteria out
